Strolling Through Saga in a Kimono? Yes, Please!

So, picture this: you’re walking through a peaceful old Japanese town, dressed in a gorgeous kimono, feeling like you just stepped out of a historical drama. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, in Saga, that dream is totally possible—and honestly, it was one of the coolest (and most photogenic) things I’ve done in Japan so far.

The place I went to used to be a shoe shop from the Edo period (like, over 150 years ago!), but it’s been renovated into this stylish little building. The first floor is a cute café, and upstairs there are different studios and galleries. One of them is run by a kimono rental and hairstyling company that helps people get all dressed up for a stroll around town.

The vibe hits you right at the entrance—with beautiful vintage bridal kimonos (called uchikake) on display like elegant art pieces. Inside, there’s a wide selection of kimonos to choose from, and the staff are super helpful. I had no clue how to wear a kimono properly, but they dressed me up in no time and made sure everything looked just right.

They even provided traditional zori sandals, tabi socks, and all the accessories, so the whole outfit felt really complete. And get this—it wasn’t even that expensive! Way more affordable than I expected for such a detailed and hands-on experience.

Once you’re dressed, you can walk around central Saga for the afternoon, and the whole place starts to feel like a movie set. People were so friendly, and I saw other tourists and locals in kimonos too, so I didn’t feel out of place at all. You can also pay a little extra to have a souvenir photo taken, or—and this is wild—get a mini 3D-printed figurine of yourself in your kimono. How cool is that?!

Just make sure you return everything before the shop closes. But honestly, spending the day wandering around in traditional clothes, taking photos, and soaking up the old-town atmosphere was something I’ll never forget. If you’re ever in Saga, definitely try it—you’ll see the town in a completely different light.
