Benimo Baum Cake: Okinawan Happiness in One Bite

If you’re looking for the perfect souvenir from Naha, this might be it.

Benimo Baum Cake from FUKUGIYA is one of those sweets that people keep talking about long after their trip ends. Even people who normally aren’t fans of Baumkuchen cakes usually end up loving this one.

The secret is the purple sweet potato, known as “beni imo” in Okinawa. It gives the cake a soft texture and natural sweetness that makes it much richer and moister than ordinary Baumkuchen. And then there’s the icing on top, which honestly makes it even harder to stop eating.

One of the best things is that you can usually sample the cake for free inside the shop before buying it. So even if you’re unsure at first, there’s a good chance you’ll leave carrying a box home anyway.

The cakes are also packaged beautifully, which makes them perfect as omiyage (Japanese travel souvenirs). They look fancy enough to impress almost anyone, even local Okinawans.

The main FUKUGIYA store is located near Kokusai Dori, one of the busiest shopping streets in Okinawa. It’s about a five-minute walk from Yui Rail’s Kencho-mae Station.

The shop can actually be easy to miss at first, but the storefront stands out because you can sometimes see bakers making cakes right in the window.

And if you forget to buy one before leaving Okinawa, don’t panic — you can also usually find Benimo Baum Cake at the airport.

What makes this cake memorable isn’t just the taste. It somehow feels very Okinawan: colourful, sweet, cheerful, and a little different from sweets you find elsewhere in Japan.

Honestly, it’s the kind of omiyage that disappears surprisingly fast once you open the box.
