Rock Your Body in the Flower Fields of Hitachi Seaside Park

When people hear the name “Hitachi,” they usually think of the electronics company Hitachi. But Hitachi Seaside Park is something completely different.

Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, this huge park is famous for three things: endless flower fields, massive open spaces, and one of Japan’s biggest rock music festivals.

The best part is that it’s easy to reach from Tokyo, making it the perfect escape from crowded city life. You can catch a direct bus from Tokyo Station, and about two hours later you’ll arrive surrounded by open skies and fresh air. Honestly, the difference feels unreal after standing in the packed station in central Tokyo.

The park itself is enormous: about 350 hectares, which is around five times bigger than Tokyo Disneyland.

What’s interesting is that the area wasn’t always a park. Before, it was used as a military site by the Japanese army, and later by the American military after World War II. The land was returned to Japan in 1973 and eventually redeveloped into the park visitors enjoy today. When it first opened in 1991, it was much smaller, but it has expanded many times since then.

Because of its huge size, the park is filled with seasonal flowers all year round. The most famous are the blue nemophila flowers that bloom in spring.

There are about 4.5 million nemophila flowers covering the hills, creating what people often call a “sea of blue.” On sunny days, the flowers almost match the colour of the sky, making it feel like the blue sky has fallen onto the grass below.

Besides nemophila, you can also see many other flowers depending on the season, including wisteria and canola flowers in spring.

And spring isn’t the only good time to visit. Different flowers bloom throughout the year, so there’s always something colourful to see no matter when you go.

But flowers are only half the story.

Rock in Japan Festival is what made the park famous across the country. It’s one of the biggest outdoor rock festivals in Japan and attracts huge crowds every summer. In August, the music festival takes place while lavender flowers are also blooming, so you can literally listen to live rock music surrounded by flowers.

Hitachi Seaside Park feels very different from most tourist spots in Japan. Instead of busy streets and tall buildings, it’s all about giant landscapes, flowers, music, and open space. If you want a break from the city, this is definitely one of the best day trips near Tokyo.
