Did you know that one of the most popular hiking mountains in the world is right near Tokyo? Even though it’s almost always called a mountain, Mt. Takao (Takaosan) is technically more of a hill, standing at just 599 metres. Still, it’s a perfect place to enjoy a gentle hike in nature and escape the busy city life.

Mt. Takao has several hiking trails, as well as a chairlift and a cable car (although they don’t take you all the way to the top). It’s less than an hour from central Tokyo by train, which makes it an ideal spot for a day trip.
Mt. Takao is one of Tokyo’s most famous tourist destinations, attracting around 2.5 million visitors every year. People of all ages visit, from young children to elderly hikers, which is why it’s often said to be the mountain with the most hikers in the world! I’d definitely recommend going on a weekday, though, as weekends can get very crowded.
On a clear day, the view from the summit is amazing and completely worth the hike. You can see all the way to Shinjuku, which is really impressive. Even though you’re still close to Tokyo, the mountain is covered in trees and the air feels fresh, making it a peaceful and relaxing place to be.
There’s also a temple near the top called Takaosan Yakuoin, which has a history of over 1,200 years. It’s a great place to experience a bit of traditional Japanese culture. After hiking back down, you can enjoy soba noodles, which are a local specialty. Just be prepared to queue at some of the more popular soba restaurants!
At Mt. Takao, you can enjoy nature, learn some history, and eat delicious food—all in one day.
